Extension applications

This section explains how you can apply to extend your stay in the United Kingdom under the entrepreneur category (Tier 1 Entrepreneur) of the points-based system.

You should read the section on eligibility first, to make sure you meet the requirements to apply.

Who can apply to extend their stay

You can apply to extend your stay if you are already in the United Kingdom under the entrepreneur category and want to extend your permission to stay within your existing category.

You can apply to extend your stay as a entrepreneur if you are already in the United Kingdom under the business person or innovator category.

If you have not previously been given permission to stay in one of these three categories, you should read the section on initial applications.

How long you can extend your stay for

If you are extending your stay as an entrepreneur, you will given a further two years permission to stay.

When the end of this period approaches you will need to make a further application.

The conditions you must meet if you want to extend your stay

Extension applications are dependent on the following conditions:

  • you have no recourse to public funds which means you will not be able to claim most benefits paid by the state;  
  • you register with the police if this is needed by paragraph 326 of the immigration rules; 
  • no employment other than working for the business or businesses that you have established, joined or taken over.
