Completing application form SET (Protection Route)
Biometric residence permits are being introduced for more immigration categories
From Wednesday 29 February 2012, all applicants in the UK will need to obtain a biometric residence permit if they are applying to stay here for more than 6 months. To obtain a permit, they will need to enrol their biometric information (fingerprints and facial image). Please ensure you use the new version of the application form.
This page contains general guidance on using application form SET (Protection Route) to apply for permission to settle in the UK (also known as 'indefinite leave to remain') as a refugee or someone granted humanitarian protection on or after 30 August 2005.
You can download the application form from the right side of this page.
You must send us your completed application form during the month before your current permission to stay (also known as 'limited leave to remain) is due to expire. For example, if your current permission expires on 30 August 2010, your application should reach us between 30 July and 30 August 2010.
It is important that you apply in time before your current permission expires. This will ensure that your case is considered easily, and your permission to stay in the UK continues.
If you do not apply in time, your permission to stay will end and we will carry out an in-depth review of your case. Your status may be revoked, causing you to be removed from the UK.
You must be in the UK when you apply.
Can I include my dependants in my application?
You should include all your dependants living in the UK on your application form, including those born in the UK since you were granted premission to stay.
Making an application
You will not be charged a fee for making this application. When you make your application, you should keep a copy of your immigration status document for your records. We recommend that you send your form by registered post, with any associated documents. When we receive your application, we will send you an acknowledgement letter as proof of receipt.
When we have decided your application, we will send the outcome via registered post. If you are successful, your permssion to settle in the UK will be confirmed on a new status document. You will need to keep this safe, as it enables you to access services and mainstream benefits.
This is a statement of current Home Office policy on eligibility for permission to settle here. The policy is subject to change, and applications will be considered in light of the policy in place at the time when they are made.
