Banned and restricted goods

This section explains which goods are restricted or banned completely from entering the United Kingdom.

Certain goods are prohibited or restricted in the United Kingdom to protect citizens' safety, health and the environment. These rules apply to all travellers, whether you are travelling from within the European Union or from outside the European Union.

Prohibited goods are banned completely in the United Kingdom. Restricted goods cannot be imported into the United Kingdom without appropriate legal documents, such as a licence. A guide to prohibited and restricted goods is on the website of HM Revenue and Customs.

There are also strict rules about bringing meat, food and plant products into the United Kingdom, to reduce the risk of pests and diseases entering the country. More information on personal food and plant imports is on the website of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
