The Government published a draft Immigration Bill on 12 November 2009, showing the progress that continues to be made in simplifying our immigration laws.
The draft bill introduces new and far-reaching concepts for the future immigration system that will strengthen our borders, simplify immigration processes and increase our effectiveness at removing those who do not have permission to be in the United Kingdom.
The command paper Simplifying Immigration Law was published alongside the draft bill. This explains the approach that has been taken and the further work to be done.
The draft bill will be scrutinised by Parliament in the new year.
A public consultation on the future framework of the Immigration Rules was also launched on 12 November 2009. The consultation document Simplifying Immigration Law - A New Framework for Immigration Rules sets out proposals for simplifying the Rules.
Responses are invited to this consultation, and to a public consultation on reforming asylum support.
