Fair, effective, transparent and trusted - rebuilding confidence in our immigration system

This page contains documents relating to the 2006-7 consultation on the introduction of an independent immigration inspectorate.

The consultation document was published in December 2006. Three months later, the Home Office published a policy statement announcing proposals for a new independent body. This body would rationalise existing regulators into a single organisation, to provide a transparent assessment of the UK Border Agency and its services.

The policy statement (which also incorporated a summary of responses to the consultation) set out how the new inspectorate would assess our performance against our policies and objectives, identifying where we were doing well and encouraging continuing improvement while identifying our weaknesses and making recommendations for rectifying them.

In April 2008, the Home Secretary made a statement to the House of Commons announcing John Vine as the first Chief Inspector of the UK Border Agency. You can find out more about the Chief Inspector on his website.
