    1. Tax authority

      The official organisation responsible for taxation.

    2. Tax credits

      Tax credits are payments from the government to help people living in the United Kingdom with everyday costs. Someone with at least one child may be able to claim a child tax credit. Someone on a low wage may be able to claim a working tax credit. More information is on the website of HM Revenue & Customs.

    3. Tax deductions

      The amount of tax taken from a salary, profit or other payment.

    4. Technical data pack

      This is a document we give to carriers as part of our e-Borders programme.  It contains information on interface development, standalone testing, certification and live service of the system the carrier will use to send us information as part of the programme.

    5. Through-tunnel freight services

      These are rail services through the Channel Tunnel that carry goods but do not carry passengers.

    6. Through-tunnel passenger services

      These are rail services through the Channel Tunnel that are for passengers only.

    7. Through-tunnel vehicle services

      These are rail services through the Channel Tunnel that carry vehicles and their passengers.

    8. Tier 1

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It applies to people who are looking for highly skilled employment in the United Kingdom, or are self-employed or setting up a business.

    9. Tier 1 (General) - highly skilled worker

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It applies to people who are looking for highly skilled employment in the United Kingdom, or are self-employed or setting up a business.

    10. Tier 2

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study in the United Kingdom. It applies to skilled people with a job offer who are looking for employment  in the United Kingdom.

    11. Tier 2 (General) - skilled worker

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It applies to skilled people with a job offer who are looking for employment in the United Kingdom, or are self-employed or setting up a business.

    12. Tier 2 - intra-company transfers

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It applies to sponsors who are transferring employees within an organisation to a skilled job under Tier 2.

    13. Tier 2 religious workers

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study as a religious worker. Its applies to skilled people with a job offer who are looking for employment in the United Kingdom.

    14. Tier 2 sports workers

      A category of the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It applies to skilled people with a job offer who are looking for employment in the United Kingdom.

    15. Tier 4

      Applies to people who are coming to the UK to undertake a course of study at a UK educational establishment.

    16. Tier 5

      Applies to people who are coming to the UK to undertake a period of temporary work or coming to the UK via the Youth Mobility Scheme.

    17. Transit

      Passing through the United Kingdom on your way to another country without staying in the United Kingdom. 

    18. Treaty rights

      This refers to the Treaty that established the European Community. The rights apply to citizens of the European Economic Area and enable them to live and work in the United Kingdom provided they will be self-sufficient (not a burden on the social assistance system).
