    1. Maintenance

      This means your available maintenance or funds when you apply under the points-based system for coming to the United Kingdom to work, train or study. It is one of the categories for which you must gain points. A defined level of maintenance is required before you can make certain applications.

    2. Managing agent

      A person you pay to manage a business for you.

    3. Mandated territory

      A mandated territory was a territory administered by the government of any country in the former British Empire by a mandate from the League of Nations (which later became the United Nations).     4. Mandatory documents

      Documents that you must send with your application.

    5. Marriage

      A legal partnership between a man and a woman. In a range of legal matters, the rights that are given to a married couple are also given to a same-sex couple in a civil partnership. (See Civil partnership.)

    6. Merchant shipping

      This is all commerical shipping except ferries, cruise ships and fishing vessels, although a merchant ship can carry a small number of fare-paying passengers.  Among the vessels it includes are: cargo vessels; (including containers; break bulk; dry bulk; wet bulk; and vehicles); dredgers, cable layers and other off-shore working vessels; off-shore supply vessels; and tugs.

    7. Minister of religion

      A minister of religion is a religious worker whose main duty is to lead a congregation in prayer and preach about his/her religious beliefs.

    8. Multiple entry certificate of sponsorship

      A multiple entry certificate of sponsorship may be issued to a migrant based overseas who is needs to enter the United Kingdom on a regular basis.

    9. Multiple entry work permit

      This type of permit allows employees who are based overseas to enter the United Kingdom on a regular basis within the period of the permit to work for the same employer.  Work permits have now been replaced by tier 2 of the points-based system.
