Work permits and accession worker cards
Waiting times and Urgent Consideration
This page sets out our service standards for processing Romanian and Bulgarian nationals' applications for registration certificates and accession worker cards.
The time taken to process your application will depend on the type of application you make. For postal applications, we aim to decide 99 per cent of our applications within 6 months of receipt. If you make your application in person at Croydon public enquiry office, we will usually process your application on the same day.
Please do not contact us to check the progress of your application until we have held it for this time. We do not provide email responses to progress enquiries.
Self-employed and Student Bulgarian and Romanian nationals do not need to hold a registration certificate before starting self-employment or studies.
We will only give urgent consideration to your application in exceptional circumstances or if you are applying for an accession worker card and you:
- hold a valid letter of approval under the work permit (business and commercial) arrangements, and
- have a letter from your employer stating that you are required to start the employment urgently.
If we need more evidence to make a decision, we will withdraw your application, return your documents and ask you to re-submit with the required documentation.
Withdrawing your application
Should you no longer wish to proceed with your application you may ask us to withdraw and return all your documents. You will no longer have the option to re-submit your application within 30 days if you choose to withdraw your application. Any subsequent applications made will therefore enter the queue at the date of submission to the Home Office.
Important information for all applicants who are requesting urgent consideration or withdrawing an application
You should not make travel plans after you have made your application and submitted your travel documents, as we can not guarantee that we will be able to return documents by a specific date.
If you need to ask us to your application or withdraw urgently, please e-mail your request, to BaRCUrgentReturns@UKBA.gsi.gov.uk. Due to the high volume of requests we receive we cannot individually acknowledge your request, and will only fast-track your application in the exceptional circumstances detailed above.
We will make every effort to return your passport or national identity card to prevent disruption to your travel arrangements, but we cannot always guarantee this.
All requests sent to BaRCUrgentReturns@UKBA.gsi.gov.uk should include the name of the main applicant, date of birth, nationality, application form type, date of posting the application and Royal Mail delivery reference. Without this information we may be unable to locate your application.
