Asylum screening unit


If you wish to claim asylum and are already in the United Kingdom, you can make your application at our Asylum Screening Unit in Croydon (south of London). You can either make an appointment in advance or attend the walk-in service. It is recommended that you make an appointment if you have to travel to guarantee you will be seen on that day.

The UK Border Agency does not refund or offer any monetary assistance for travelling to and from the ASU.

Please note that the process can be lengthy and may take several hours to complete. There is also a possibility you may be detained. If it is decided that you will be detained you will be given a letter outlining the reasons why.

  • Asylum screening unit - Croydon

    Facilities:

    • Coffee shop selling hot and cold drinks and snacks
    • Vending machines selling hot and cold drinks
    • Male and female multi-denominational prayer rooms
    • Unisex baby changing room
    • Public pay phones

    Facilities for the disabled:

    • Lifts
    • Accessible toilets
    • Parking for disabled badge holders in the  public car park opposite Lunar House, adjacent to the Whitgift Centre.

    We do not have the facilities for children to be supervised; children should be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. If you are bringing children, please ensure that you have enough food and drink and where appropriate, milk and nappies.  If you are taking any type of medication that you may need to take within 24 hours you must ensure that you bring it with you.

  • Further submissions unit - Liverpool

    From 14 October 2009, any failed asylum seeker who initially claimed asylum before 5 March 2007 can only make a further submission in person. You must: 

    • first telephone the further submissions unit on 0151 237 0980 to make an appointment - you will be given the date, time and location of the appointment; and 
    • then attend this appointment at the Liverpool further submissions unit to hand in your further written submission.

    Please note that this appointment will not involve any interview or meeting with the decision-maker.

    There is no walk-in service at the unit.

    Once you have booked your appointment by telephone, you should receive a confirmation letter. You should bring this letter to the further submissions unit when you attend the appointment.
